Exchange Invest Weekend 2904: Marchlands of Crime

The Myanmar marchlands of industrial crime, the Panama Canal’s Future, quake prep, Tectonic plates, the futility of kitchen renovations.

Exchange Invest is a unique information resource combining the day’s stories in a newsletter for investors in exchanges/financial markets infrastructure.

Exchange Invest was founded by former exchange CEO and author of the first bestselling book of fintech (“Capital Market Revolution!” FT 1999) Patrick L Young. Monday through Friday our daily paid subscriber email discusses the business of bourses of all kinds across the world.

On this day in 1999, Hewlett-Packard announced that it would split its non-computer business into a separate company.

From Exchange Invest 2896:Thursday, February 22nd:

Such a busy start to the year we didn’t have a chance to discuss last December’s elections in Serbia where President Aleksandar Vucic was re-elected. Of course, the likes of the NYT had paroxysms, noting (Serbia’s Leader Tightens Grip On Power In General Election, Early Results Show — The New York Times):

“Like all previous elections in the deeply polarized Balkan nation, Sunday’s poll was marred by reports of voting irregularities and complaints that Mr. Vucic’s stranglehold on much of the Serbian media and on a large state sector employing hundreds of thousands of voters had again given his party an unfair advantage.”

Indeed it’s a coyote ugly state of affairs when the President even issues executive orders demanding government officials intervene in expanding voter participation and actively seek to count votes / man ballot boxes etc.

…Except the President who did that wasn’t Vucic, it’s none other than bigoted Biden himself. Joe Brezhnev signed Executive Order 14019 in 2021 (Executive Order On Promoting Access To Voting — White House)… Haven’t seen the NYT so worried about that one, oddly.

Meanwhile, after the general election in Pakistan, the outlook remains #itscomplicated:

In Pakistan, despite imprisoning party leader Imran Khan and making his candidates run as independents, his PTI party has still emerged as the largest in Parliament with 149 seats. 20 seats short of an overall majority…

Naturally, the military have manipulated a weak coalition of 8 other parties to keep Khan out of office and broadly guaranteeing the new govt will not last but the army’s influence on the country remains assured.

(Readers are welcome to wonder aloud at how the Pakistani manipulation of the election is a vast threat to democracy…according to the same sorts of journals which cheered Poland’s new government being formed by second place PO along with smaller parties, under Europhile PM Donald Tusk).

Pig Butchering V2.0

The ugly spectre of ‘pig butchering’ a term for a vile thread of dating fraud raised its head again this week. Last year (Binance Got Off The Hook From $8m Tinder ‘Pig Butchering’ Lawsuit) when “Divya Gadasalli was “promised romance and financial prosperity” by a man going by “Jerry Bulasa” on Tinder, but ended up losing over $8 million” CZ Inc was excused from the case. Now however a Texan pensioner, one Leonard Licht has Binance and indeed CZ right in his sights: ‘Pig Butchering’ Victim Slaps Binance, Ex-CEO With RICO Suit (Law360) / Licht v. Zhao et al 1:2024cv10447 (US District Court for the District of Massachusetts | Justia)

In the end despite extradition being imminent, it looks as if, as we expected: Terraform Labs Co-Founder Do Kwon To Miss Start Of US SEC Trial (Reuters).

…we noted the Naira crisis which is causing the Central Bank of Nigeria all manner of problems — and they have been quick to cauterise as many crypto connections as possible to reduce capital flight. However, the numbers are eyepopping: $26bn Passed Through Binance Nigeria In One Year — Cardoso (Channels Television).

“We may even reach roughly the same conclusions as Thunberg, after some thought. The question is more about why some of us ever wanted to switch off our brains and let a 15-year-old do the thinking and feeling for us.”

PLY: There is a cruel irony that Greta — memorably nicknamed “the Swedish doom goblin” by Rod Liddle — will fall foul of the cult of youth. Fun fact I had not known — her middle name is “Tintin.”
