On this day in 2021, the LSEG Acquisition of Refinitiv successfully completed. Where “successfully completed” means the deal was done. The integration…? #OpenToDebate.

This week I was absolutely saddened to hear of the demise of Derek Tullett who with David Riley in 1971 created the eponymous brokerage which became one of the world’s leading IDBs… In some ways, it is such a shame Derek lived to see the firm’s proud roots upended by the shambolic management of the TP ICAP era although he had long since sold out.

Elsewhere, I read a story from last week of how another WWE starlet had tied up with a cryptocurrency exchange and I just couldn’t decide what might have triggered Bitcoin et al to peak recently…

From Exchange Invest 2258: 25th, January 2022: Tuesday

As readers will know I have an ingrained disdain for those who represent the vast blob of insufferable incompetence rightly known as “the blob” for billions of taxpayer dollars wasting reasons. To that end, in the midst of threats, there might be a recurrent outbreak of government … I know it will probably amount to a widespread but weaker strain that won’t amount to anything of significance… at least in the UK (the EU-US is a definitive lost cause nexus for some time to come). …Anyway in what amounts to the sort of reason why this Anglo-Irishman retains a proud British streak, is the behaviour of the Lord Agnew whose departure from office as Minister of State for Efficiency and Transformation in the UK Cabinet Office marks the sort of epic moment that is SO innately British as to be quite surreal. Entirely worth a 6-minute watch to see how to craft a speech that is so polite and respectful that the payload is arguably more efficient than the never used in practice (phew!) B-41 bomb.

Macro Thoughts

“If only more of the world’s mass media could shift their emphasis from news scoops to didactic features on improving governance and governors for our era’s challenges. Then the need for moral veracity could be placed upon the whole governing system, rather than just thoughtless partygoers — whether boosted or not.”

Brexit: Done

“That you can ride the underground at 7pm dressed in a bunny costume and no-one will even flinch, has something to do with hard-working entrepreneurs of all stripes being a cause of celebration, whether they become billionaires, are just running a mom-and-pop shop or, well… crash. These are all facets of the same go-for-it attitude that make a society less suspicious of success and more forgiving of failure — in other words, that rewards risk.

…I am also British precisely because I am an immigrant. Again, Brexit Britain would have you believe that the country became suddenly inhospitable to foreigners. Judging from the gathering at the assembly hall today, many people clearly didn’t read the memo.

Maybe the definite marker of “Global Britain” is not to be sought in unlikely trade deals with far-flung countries but inward instead, in its continued magnetic appeal as a place where a lot of the rest of the world would rather live.”
