On this day in 1904, St. Louis opened its doors to the world for what was officially called the “Louisiana Purchase Exposition,” but was widely known as the St. Louis World’s Fair.

The fair lasted 7 months and inspired the phrase “Meet Me in St. Louis.” The temperatures in St. Louis soared and hot-tea vendor Richard Blechynden began pouring his tea over ice, thus achieving the invention of iced-tea. The fair also popularized the all-American hamburger, sausage in a bun, the hot dog with prepared mustard and the ice cream cone.

I know little of the breakaway statelet of Somaliland, 17X larger than Kosovo but lacking that critical multi-governmental recognition of the latter. Without significant foreign aid, the republic which broke away from Somalia over 30 years ago, maintains a rather elementary GDP level.

The economy was further impacted on the eve of Ramadan when a fire swept through the Waaheen market at the centre of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. Some 5000 small businesses were affected and the impact on national GDP may be as much as 20%.

COVID-19

I think we’re going post-Covid, and thus will retire this section from its weekly recurrence — having successfully predicted the 2-year trajectory of the virus way back when the meeja was losing its mind and illuminated when hysteria was promulgating a mega plague, I think this column has elegantly served its purpose.

As things stand, Europe is gradually opening, the US is fighting its prescient judiciary but reopening and so is the Caribbean. China lags, having started the whole process but I suspect the Covid 19 section will only be periodic in its inclusion going forward…
