From Syria’s narco state to Good Ol’ Charlie Brown. The Welsh founder of Donetsk. Celebrating 8 billion earthlings & more…

On this day in 1990, the Shanghai Stock Exchange was established.

Exchange Invest is a unique information resource combining the day’s stories in a newsletter for investors in exchanges/financial markets infrastructure.

Exchange Invest was founded by former exchange CEO and author of the first bestselling book of fintech (“Capital Market Revolution!” FT 1999) Patrick L Young. Monday through Friday our daily paid subscriber email discusses the business of bourses of all kinds across the world.

This weekly edition is a magazine of broader macro topics as well as including our free weekly podcast which reviews the highlights of the week in the world’s market structure.

Parish Notes

26 days since we started our #Bitcarnage story noting “FTX may be holed below the waterline.” — a remarkable tale of hype, hubris and indeed reality biting the #cryptoverse… #ExchangeInvest is proud of our team that have been ahead of this story for 3 consistent weeks.

Exchange Invest is the Exchange of Information… and BTW it’s the last chance to sign up at $299 for a subscription for the year — rates are increasing on January 1st…

Of Interest

As always, a review of interesting reading to provoke thoughts and consideration… Not sure we agree with much of it….but it’s thought-provoking!

PLY: When pondering this week’s edition rather than a preponderance of great thinking from a cornucopia of sources, I chose just one correspondent. Perhaps it was an after-effect of dealing with the knobbly knee perma-shorted SBF but I was reading the High Life Column which Taki has contributed since 1977 (despite an issue with a cocaine possession imprisonment in Pentonville during 1984). He is old school, holds some quite extreme opinions of various nations that are not Greek and — health warnings over — I present a few highly readable columns and note the words of Boris Johnson in his Valedictory article departing the Spectator as Editor: Advice To My Successor.

“And then the phone goes again, and this time I would wager it is Taki, calling from Gstaad, full of good cheer and anxious to find out whether or not you are going to sack him. At this stage in your editorship the sacking or keeping of Taki is likely to be turned into a culture war of Dreyfus-like proportions.

The Guardian and other papers will start a horrible drumming roar for his dismissal. It is time, they say, that The Spectator showed it has moved on. Soon the whole of civilised London has joined in. Sack Taki! Sack Taki! Faced with that overwhelming consensus, you have only one choice, though it is of course entirely up to you to decide what that is.”

“If the Clintons were not so down-market, they would have fit perfectly into 15th century Florence, the city that gave us Botticelli, Cellini, the Medici, and of course Machiavelli.”

The Golden Age Of Motor Sport

The Spectator

“There are heroes and then there are unsung ones, and I basically prefer the latter as I have known a few of them in my lifetime. The funny thing is that I grew up learning only about famous heroes, the Ancient Greek type, starting with the semi-God Achilles. Homer didn’t deal with unsung heroes; everyone was larger than life, and there were only winners and losers. The person I’ll tell you about this week would not have been a Homeric hero, but he certainly was one while participating in the most dangerous game in the world.

Lance Macklin was an Old Etonian, a second world war navy vet, and a dashing racing driver at a time when a shunt meant instant immolation and certain death.”

The Last Playboy Of The Riviera — Taki Theodoracopulos

Gentlemen’s Journal

“The old Riviera lifestyle might still exist elsewhere. Maybe in Harbour Island in the Bahamas where Arki Busson goes. It’s a tiny place with a few houses and some eclectic people. Or some place in the Greek islands where I go to meet my friends. But there’s nothing like the Riviera, that old magical land. It no longer exists. Onassis died, and his houses were bought by Russians who will shoot at you if you come within 200 yards of their property.”

PLY: Interesting mention of Porfirio Rubirosa…

The Last Playboy: Taki Remembers The Golden New Year’s Eves Of Old

Gentleman’s Journal

“Of all the eves I’ve spent, talking to Alan Jay Lerner was the most instructive and stopped me from the Karamazovian hangovers that usually followed. In the old continent, New Year’s Eve was not the big shebang that it was in America.”
