8 min readApr 19, 2025

A tribute to the art of the flight safety video — #srsly some epic content! Happy Easter whether you are flying or not!

Exchange Invest is a unique information resource combining the day’s stories in a newsletter for investors in exchanges/financial markets infrastructure.

Exchange Invest was founded by former exchange CEO and author of the first bestselling book of fintech (“Capital Market Revolution!” FT 1999) Patrick Young. Monday through Friday our daily paid subscriber email discusses the business of bourses of all kinds across the world.

On this day in 1933, the USA went off the gold standard by presidential proclamation.

MACRO THOUGHTS

In 2024, scheduled airlines had record capacity of 5.85 billion seats on offer and the industry filled 83.5%. In other words, roughly 4.9 billion passengers flew last year out of a global population of just over 8 billion people.

2019 was the previous high water mark (5.72 available seats), before the COVID catastrophe. Incidentally there were actually 5% more flights in 2019 whereas larger capacity aircraft bumped up passenger totals in 2024, making a grand total of 36.4 million take-offs and landings…

The average plane had capacity for 161 passengers per flight in 2024 versus 150 in 2019 and 140 a decade ago.

IN BIGWORLD

Here’s a fascinating thought on tariffs.

NB Major US retailers have been endeavouring to pressure Chinese suppliers to cut prices — Naturally that has met with a ‘cup of cold sick welcome’ from the suppliers.

However, here’s an eye-popping stat I spotted in a story about the De Minimis exemption being closed and its potential impact on thousands of Chinese operators exporting to the USA selling through AliExpress, Temu, Amazon etc.

One exporter noted that their freight costs had tumbled to US$1,500 per forty-foot equivalent unit, from US$20,000 in 2021. That does deliver some tariff wiggle room.

PS I have no idea how avian flu affected this weekend’s major retail candy fetish but how come Easter eggs are so expensive along with the usual chicken borne boilables?

BITCARNAGE

Where’s the Beef?

In the latest episode of “Say anything to take the price up” we have the recently pardoned Bitmex founder Arthur Hayes saying: China’s Tariff Response May Mean More Capital Flight To Crypto (Cointelegraph).

The only tricky part to this otherwise impeccable thesis is — apart from further confusing the ownership case for Bitcoin — the evidence that ANYBODY thinks, “oh the world is volatile across markets, let’s buy crypto as a hedge!” …is scant.

Or maybe it’s because servers will be more expensive? #AskingForAFriend.

OF INTEREST

As always, a review of interesting reading to provoke thoughts and consideration… Not sure we agree with much of it….but it’s thought-provoking!

Our Safety Video
British Airways

PLY: BA are leading the pack right now — for safety videos. I mean the planes are a bit aged, the food a touch average but the booze flows as always and the cabin crew are cheery. However this — the latest in a series of Cool Brittania style videos is a classic of the alt safety video genre.

Meanwhile, I wouldn’t rush to watch this early ANZ alt safety vid unless it’s a really long weekend — Mile-high madness with Richard Simmons! — But the title is catchy and it involves an apparent dancefloor in a plane which reminds me that Air Canada once had a service where there was a disco in the bubble of a 747… I know, those crazy Canucks, eh?

The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made #AirNZSafetyVideo
Air New Zealand

PLY: I am an unabashed Tolkien ignoramus — as proven by that time I couldn’t get Gandalf out the window in the Sinclair Spectrum video game of The Hobbit to progress…anywhere in Middle Earth.

However, this is rather impressive. To commemorate the end of the millionth sequel to the Tolkien trilogies ANZ, a pioneer in alt safety vids included everybody/thing including director Peter Jackson for a true spectacular.

History And Safety Combine In The Epic Qantas Centenary Safety Video
The Points Guy

PLY: This video apparently took a year to make. Then again as QANTAS have never lost a major commercial airliner to an accident I suppose that’s the kind of attention to detail which gives you such a wondrous track record of safe landings.

MEA New Safety Video Featuring Our Beautiful Lebanon
MEA

PLY: I just loved this video heading into Beirut before COVID years ago. A cool way to perceive the notion of aircraft safety and enjoy the natural beauty of historic Lebanon.

Turkish Airlines LEGO Movie Safety Video
Aviation Video (qz0701)

PLY: TK is a firm PLY favourite and their animated safety videos have included gems such as this co-production with the LEGO movie…

…Wonder if we will have the Minecraft movie airline safety video soon? “Our airline is baby zombie friendly but please ensure your Chicken jockey is safely stowed before take off and landing…”
