MACRO THOUGHTS
“What would a health warning on UPF actually say? A cancer warning on a pack of cigarettes is evidence-based. If you start putting cancer warnings on pasta sauce and sliced bread, you are going to have some litigation on your hands, and rightly so.”
— Christopher Snowdon (Ultra-Processed Food And Elite Opinion)

BITCARNAGE
This ain’t money it’s gold
…Or words to that effect can be attributed to Howard Lutnick of Cantor / BGC et al (and now CME competitor FMX: Bitcoin Should Be Treated As A Commodity, Like Gold — Cantor Fitzgerald CEO (Cointelegraph).
That’s an intriguing argument as it would place BTC squarely under CFTC but would presumably appal those who think the clunky blockchain is the future of money…

FINANCE BOOK OF THE WEEK
“The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” by Michael Lewis is a sequel to Liar’s Poker, our book of the week last week. This sequel is about the crash that began in bizarre feeder markets where the sun doesn’t shine and the SEC doesn’t dare, or bother, to tread: the bond and real estate derivative markets where geeks invent impenetrable securities to profit from the misery of the Americans who can’t pay their debts.

CAPITAL MARKET REVOLUTION
First published in 1999, “Capital Market Revolution!” offered a clear, concise roadmap for navigating the financial revolution fueled by technology. And 25 years later, as the world of fintech continues to evolve, the core principles laid out in the book remain surprisingly sharp
This new edition was produced to celebrate PLY ringing the NYSE Closing Bell July 5th, 2024. There are several new sections of PLY pith to add 10,000 more words of context and the original book which is remarkably prescient and elegantly dated all at once! It’s only $9.99 on Kindle, a fraction of the original price in 1999 to encourage revolutionaries with any budget!

AFM & Exberry: Fintech Revolution And Disruption
“All exchange operators require three vital functions to ensure an orderly market which is customer-cenric in the contemporary age:
Technology
Technology
Technology”
-“The Exchange Manifesto”, Official 10th Anniversary Publication of the Association of Futures Market*
*by PLY, who else?
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure to compere a live discussion “Fintech Revolution And Disruption” on behalf of AFM, with Exberry co-founder and CEO Guy Melamed, former AFM chairman Pat Kenny and current AFM Chairman Chris Sturgess.
If you missed this event, you can still watch it here.
A great chance to catch up with several past IPO-VID guests:
Guy Melamed (IPO-VID 076: Exberry: Building Cloud Based Exchanges, with Magnus Almqvist).
Pat Kenny (IPO-VID 107: AFM 25 Years On with Paul Constantinou).
Chris Sturgess (IPO-VID 109: AFM, Africa & Commodities).
Ultimately AFM remains my favourite exchange industry association melding relationships with a unique network which is leveraged with IT as Pat, Chris and Guy all noted.
There’s still time to register, here for a tech-centric day in markets:
